Horizons

At my height, looking east
under the burning sun
with the Atlantic softly
lapping at my toes, I should
see the lows boiling
off Cape Verde and building
toward the next killer
hurricane. My horizon
is only three miles away.
However, if I paint
the seascape, the lines
of the jetties and pier
and rippled sunlight
vanish in an infinite point
where calm or storm is just
a matter of perspective.
